🤖 How To Use AI To Your Advantage

Because no one really teaches you how to study ̄\_(ツ)_/ ̄

Hi y’all,

The funny thing about school is that we go there to learn, yet we must teach ourselves how to learn effectively. And no one at school really teaches us that! So, let’s talk about how to study effectively using less time — specifically using AI. Here is what I’m going to cover in my post:

  1. Choosing the perfect model for your subject. Every AI model is ideal for a specific subject; think of it as having different teachers at school. Each teacher specializes in one subject; AI models work using the same principle! Of course, the content for your subject matters, too; is it easier to visualize, or is it more wordy? For example, if I’m studying functions, I like to visualize how everything connects and why/how a specific strategy works. So, my prompt would be something like, “ I’m learning Algebra. How can I calculate the roots of a parabola? Where are the roots in a graph? Explain using visuals, and algebraic terms". This prompt tells the chatbot what my mathematical understanding is, what my question is, and how I want it to be explained. This leads me to another topic I want to cover: how to create a prompt.

  2. How to create a prompt. Okay, I know you have written a prompt. But if you refine your wording a bit and set a clear goal with specific ways you want the information to be explained, it will drastically change the output.

    So let’s start!

1)  🔍 Choose the Perfect Chatbot

AI Chatbots are perfect to use whenever you don’t understand something in a topic and need it to be rephrased in another way.

As you know, there are many different types of freely available chatbots for the public. Most of these ‘bots’ share similar features such as “think deeper,“ “search the web, “ and “upload files“. However, it’s best to recognize from your own experience which works best for you. Personally, I like Bing AI for easy-going work, while ChatGPT for more analytical topics. But in the end, it’s your choice!

Here is what I like about each:

Model

Features

Best Subject to Use For

Claude

👍️ Good For Coding (GitHub) and explaining Math

👍️ Analysis and Tone features

👎️ Limited Responses on Free Pl

- Computer Sci.

- English/History (Essay writing)

Microsoft Copilot/Bing AI

👍️ Useful for all subjects

👍️ Can upload documents for test prep + can “think deeper“

👎️ Requires an account for image generation and uploading documents

- English (specifically for analysis, summaries, and questions and answers for books)

- History (writing essays, memorizing info, etc)

- Language Learning (practice problems, questions, etc…)

🌟 ChatGPT

👍️ Useful for all subjects. I prefer this for math, and as I said earlier, analytical topics.

👍️ Can upload documents, specifically research info, and “think deeper“

👎️ Sometimes it is not updated to the current info.

- Computer Science (code debugging, and explanations, but I suggest using V0 dev or Cursor)

- Math (explanations, etc…)

- Language Learning (practice problems, questions, etc…)

- English (researching, etc)

and more!

Remember that any chatbot is capable of making mistakes!

2) 🪄 How to create a prompt

Alright, I’m going to keep this short and simple.

A prompt is what you — the user — tell the AI model what to do; what information to look for, and what to explain.

If you don’t set clear expectations in your prompt, whatever AI model you are using has no idea how to explain it to you correctly.

In Ethan Mollick’s words, tools such as ChatGPT “are machines you are programming with words“(Mollick 2023). So there is one thing you have to remember when writing a successful prompt… to be specific.

Prompt:

For example, if I ask ChatGPT, “Explain quadratic functions and their graphs.“

Response:

I get a response that starts with the General Form, then vertex, calculating roots, then…

You get the point; it starts summarizing all the information related to quadratic functions and their graphs.

However!

Prompt:

If I ask, “I'm starting to learn about quadratic functions and how to graph them. Can you explain how to graph a function as well as some resources?“

Response:

This new prompt leads to a response that is more cohesive with the topics I need help with. It only provides information on graphing and resources to use.

For other subjects, like language learning, it’s best to provide an example of what you are looking for. For instance, if you want ChatGPT to generate practice problems for a Spanish grammar test on conjugating a verb, provide an example of the verb being conjugated and what verbs you need practice on. Here are a couple more examples of good and bad prompts:

👍️ Create a study plan for me focusing on [subject], with 2 hours of study time each day, including breaks and practice exercises.

👍️ Explain the concept of [topic] in simple terms, using analogies and real-world examples.

Tell me about history.

What is the meaning of life if we lose everything in the end?

How can I be a better student?

To recap, when making a prompt:

  1. Define what you need help with and what you understand of it (the context)

    1.  Are you summarizing a text, creating a study plan, or seeking information?

    2. What part of the topic do you need help with?

  2. Be Specific!

    1.   Don’t use vague language like “Tell me about…”; this often leads to a jumbled response that covers a variety of topics.

  3. Provide Examples

  4. Need a response in a specific format? Provide an example!

The next time you write a prompt, remember that it should be detailed, and if possible, provide an example of what information you are looking for!

So what I want you to take away is that AI chatbots can help you study by creating study plans, practice problems, graphs, tables, concept summaries, and more! Utilizing this resource really cuts down studying time, and increases “you time”.

Keep on learning! ❤️
